If you are an area musician, and especially if you take part in the MAMA Awards, here is a little-known fact: In most cases artists are determining who is winning MAMA Awards.
This has been true for many years now, ever since a weighted system was put in place. Here’s how it works:
- Fans voting in the MAMA Awards are given a lower weight in almost all categories
- Voters registered as artists receive more weight in almost all categories
- The most weight is given to artists who are registered in award categories and vote in the category they have registered in
Why was this done? The MAMA organization wanted to make the voting more of a peer review while at the same time stimulating more artists to sign up and vote. Each year the voting is scrutinized for voting patterns. What we’ve found is that while artist votes are largely deciding who is winning there are far too many artists who register for awards consideration but do not vote, not even in their own category.
This year, there is no minimum donation to register or to vote. While registration has already ended, voting is open now. The first round runs through September 16th.
