Wisconsin Artists Cover Classic Protest Songs

“I felt like it was time to do something. I wanted to use my platform as an avenue for positive action. I decided to gather some friends so we could stand together.” This is a quote from Oshkosh musician Cody James, the force behind a current, ongoing project called Parallel Universe. The project is a compilation album featuring ten Wisconsin artists all of whom will cover protest songs from the American canon with the intent to show solidarity with current civil rights movements.

Participating artists are being announced successively and you can keep up with the project at the Parallel Universe Facebook page.

At the time of writing two participants have been selected.

Dana Perry, fresh off her MAMA Award win for Folk/Americana Performer will record the classic Creedence Clearwater Revival song, “Fortunate Son.”  The latest announcement is Oshkosh native Brittany Hernandez who will cover the classic Sam Cooke song “A Change Is Gonna Come.”

Visual artists are also being included and the first one to sign on is Oshkosh artist Jessica Lomena.

The project promises to be an interesting one so keep your eye on the Facebook page and watch for a review at Local Sounds Magazine upon completion.

Here is a video of James performing Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth.”
