Coalition for the Recognition of Clyde Stubblefield Will Honor the Legendary Drummer
Three Events Are Planned to Honor Madison Music Legend
Clyde Stubblefield Scholarship Fund Drive Happening Now
It’s been a whirlwind of activity for the Coalition for the Recognition of Clyde Stubblefield. Since spring the all-volunteer group has been holding regular meeting in planning to honor one of Madison’s most illustrious citizens.
The Coalition sprang from the Madison Blues Society as it pondered the realization that it was time, time to “Give the Drummer Some” which became the slogan for the Coalition that spun off from Blues Society to function independently. Stubblefield played drums for the James Brown Band and Brown used the slogan to cue Stubblefield’s drum solo.
The Coalition for Recognition of Clyde Stubblefield began exploring scholarship ideas over the spring and summer. They wanted to create, not just a fundraising effort that will live on, but a way to spotlight the accomplishments of Mr. Stubblefield and his important worldwide contributions to music, as well as his contributions to the Madison music scene for over forty years. The result is the establishment of the Clyde Stubblefield Scholarship Fund which will award funds to a graduating senior who will move on to higher education with a concentration in music. The Fund will be managed by the Foundation for Madison Public Schools and plans are in the works to make the first award in 2016. Donations can be made at Power2Give Dane County or directly to the fiscal receiver at Arts Wisconsin.
The plans to honor Stubblefield will be carried out through three separate events. The first is being held at the High Noon on August 30 and will feature the Clyde Stubblefield All Star Band. That event runs from 3-7 pm.
The second event will take place at the Barrymore Theatre on September 11 also with the Clyde Stubblefield All Star Band. That event will begin at 8 pm. Advance tickets are suggested and available at the Barrymore Box Office.
The culmination will take place at the Overture Center Lobby on Thursday, October 8th as part of the Madcity Sessions series. This will be a free event. Stubblefield will be honored with the keys to city and the musical performances will feature fellow James Brown drummer John “Jabo” Starks with more musicians travelling in to take part. Those confirmations will be added in the coming weeks. Also featured will be The Black Star Drum Line Performance Group and The Big Payback funk band.
“It’s time,” says Joey B. Banks, one of the organizers on the scholarship fund committee. “Clyde’s a living legend. He’s given back through his time and talents again and again over the years. It’s time to honor his achievements, and to begin a permanent scholarship for deserving kids in our area.”
