Triple M’s Project M Competition Kicks Off Third Year
105.5 Triple M has just completed the signup period for this year’s Project M competition. 2014 marks the third installment of the contest which presents the competitors with weekly compositional challenges. This year the competition is open to solo singer/songwriters only. According to Jeff Matthias at Entercom, TripleM’s parent company, the number of entrants has exceeded expectations, standing at twenty-five as of Friday, March 21, two days before the deadline of March 23rd. Contest officials will sort through all the applicants, choosing eight to compete over the month of April. The lucky eight will be notified March 25th.
Project M will test the competitors on multiple levels. The first test, naturally, is passing the “audition” of submitting recorded material and making the final eight. The contest will require them to compose original material repeatedly over one week spans. Then the contestants must perform the material, which will be videotaped for the public to judge via online voting. So they must perform well but must also come across on video, which can be two very different things. A panel of judges will use the voting results as indicators of who wins the weekly prizes and who gets eliminated. The public votes, however, are not the final determinant.
The first challenge will be thrown down April 1st at 105.5 Triple M Headquarters. The station is located on Madison’s west side on Ganser Way. Contestants will have six days to prepare and then must appear at Funk’s Pub located at 5956 Executive Drive #101 in Fitchburg on April 7 at 6pm to perform their response to the challenge. The videos of the performances will be posted on April 9th at the Triple M website. Listeners can vote until April 14th at which time the weekly winner will be chosen and the remaining contestants will move to Challenge 2.
Five similar challenges will be held over consecutive weeks, all at Funk’s. The final, sixth challenge will take place at the High Noon Saloon, 701 E. Washington Ave., on May 14th at 7pm. Each remaining Finalist will receive the opportunity to perform up to thirty minutes of their original music and the Grand Prize winner will be selected.
The winner will have their song played on Station in regular rotation on 105.5 Triple M for a minimum period of one month. The winner will also receive a gig at Summerfest and a $1,000 check.
